Considering a care home? Checklist Surrey County Council

There are actions the council can take if we think you have deliberately given away or sold property for less than its worth. Paying higher than normal fees for discharges from hospital into care homes and a temporary 10% premium for new home care packages following hospital discharge from 19 March to the end of June. The costs of residential homes vary, often depending on the type of facilities provided and the amount and type of care you need. If you will be self-funding a care home placement, it is important that you understand the costs when you enter into the contract with the home and consider whether your money will last for the duration of your stay.

What counts as property?

From 1 April 2015, the council may make a charge for these services but does not have to do so unless the resident has capital above the upper capital limit of £23,250. What happens after the '12 week property disregard'?

The amount you have to pay is determined through a financial assessment. Any information you enter will not be sent to us, unless you choose to submit it. If we provide you with social care services you may need to contribute towards the cost of your care.

Local authorities are required to help signpost people to independent financial advice about care and support. When it comes to paying for care in later life, there's no one size that fits all. How much it costs to get the right support will depend on your individual needs, financial circumstances and where you live in the UK.
