There are actions the council can take if we think you have deliberately given away or sold property for less than its worth. When savings fall to the capital limit

How much will a local authority pay for a care home?

What counts as property?
From 1 April 2015, the council may make a charge for these services but does not have to do so unless the resident has capital above the upper capital limit of £23,250. You should inform the council of your situation at least two months before your savings drop to the upper capital limit. We will then arrange to assess your care and support needs and also carry out a financial assessment. If you have given away money or property in order to avoid paying for your care, we will need to consider whether that person may be liable for some or all of the costs.

The amount you have to pay is determined through a financial assessment. Local authorities are required to help signpost people to independent financial advice about care and support. When it comes to paying for care in later life, there's no one size that fits all. How much it costs to get the right support will depend on your individual needs, financial circumstances and where you live in the UK. In addition to where you live, the fees you pay also depend on the level of your care needs. For example, a care home is likely to charge a higher fee for someone who has dementia, as the levels of care and support that person requires are higher than for a person without dementia. There was no uplift available for those packages above the new guide price. 24-hour home care or 24hr live-in care means an external carer will move into the home of your loved one and care for them around the clock. The carer will be able to help with all activities and provide company throughout the day.
If you are a temporary resident allowances can be made for some of your housing costs. You will also keep an additional £20 each week for up to a maximum of eight weeks. If you are a permanent resident we will usually ignore the value of the property for the first 12 weeks of permanent care. If you own a second property its value will be taken into account from the date of admission.
